Pan in Trinidadian culture, Jit Samaroo

Too many pictures for one page, so here are a few more pictures for week two:

8) This picture was requested, and I am now able to oblige. I'm in my usual place in the band, resting during a short break in the rehearsal. That's my assigned pan, #4/02 (the fourth tenor pan they acquired in 2002). Others are working on their parts behind me.

Yes, that's a Trinidad & Tobago National Team football jersey. Football jerseys, especially for English and Italian teams, are en vogue here, and are treated like t-shirts are in the U.S. Some people wear them every day. Don't worry, Julie, honey, I bought one for you, too!

9A,B,C) An indication of where pan sits in Trinidadian culture, below (A) is the logo of the Hi Lo grocery store, the nation's largest supermarket chain, on one of their shopping bags. Pan was officially designated by government here the national instrument of Trinidad & Tobago in the 70's, and images of pan are on the $20 bill here (B). Daily newspaper articles, often on the front page, cover the various aspects of the Panorama competition (C).

10) This gentleman (on the left, obviously) is Jit Samaroo, the most winning Panorama arranger in the history of the competition, and a great innovator in the field. His arrangeing style had an early influence on me, and so it was an honor to meet with him. He was kind enough to have me over for a drink and some relevant conversation. I look forward to running into him again during my stay.

11) Just a friendly full page ad reminder from the Committee Against Crime...
