A
recording artist ceates a product from his or her performance by
documenting that performance in the form of recorded music, which is
then released for sale or licensing. There is very little glamour in
being a recording artist, as the nuts-and-bolts work that goes into the
creation of a release is exhausting.

Unless the musician has major label support, he or she will bear the financial burden of the production, paying musicians, producers, studios, post production facilities, graphic artists, and manufacturers. In addition to writing checks, the artist who self-produces will also be on the phone a significant amount of time to coordinate the schedules of all those involved. Making a recording is not for the faint-hearted!
